Torchy's August Taco(s) of the Month
One of favorite things about Torchy’s Tacos is that every month they offer a Taco of the Month that is always a bit outside the box but always delicious. However, in August they offer FOUR tacos of the month with their Some Like It Hot challenge. Each week, throughout the month of August, they release a new taco - each one, hotter than the last. By the final week (which kicks off 8/20) all four tacos are available for those that dare to test their taste buds.
While personally, I do like it hot, I know that the last taco would not be for me so I stopped in once the first three were available to test them out myself. I also obviously had to get an order of queso because if you go to Torchy’s and don’t get queso...did you even go?
So here was my line-up:
THE BARN BURNER
Grilled fajita beef, chopped bacon, Manzano chile salad, Texas artisan goat cheese and cilantro topped with Avocado & Diablo sauce
This was the first taco released - as long as you are okay with some heat, you will definitely enjoy this one. It was flavorful and I loved the use of goat cheese!
BOTTLE ROCKET SHRIMP
Habanero battered fried shrimp, cabbage slaw, cotija cheese, candied jalapeños and cilantro topped with Diablo mayo
So I went into this taco with expectations that it would be just a bit hotter than the previous, since it was only 2nd in the line-up. Well, I was wrong - this was probably the spiciest thing I’ve ever eaten. However, it was still flavorful and the heat didn’t completely over power the flavors. If you can handle the heat, and love a good shrimp taco - I recommend you try this out before it’s gone! I also recommend you have (lots of) water and an extra tortilla nearby to help cool your mouth down.
THE CREEPER
Habanero battered fried chicken, chorizo, chopped bacon, Brushfire jalapeños, cotija cheese, pickled onions and cilantro topped with creamy ghost pepper sauce
After the Bottle Rocket Shrimp taco, I was seriously a bit scared to try this one. It is named The Creeper for a reason - the spice is not an immediate heat, it creeps up a few seconds after you have taken and chewed your first bite. For some reason though, I didn’t find this one as hot as the previous! I’d love to hear from any of you who try them both to see which you thought was hotter!
The final taco, The Scalding Pig, has pasilla and ghost pepper stewed pork, jack cheese, escabeche, sour cream and cilantro with a drizzle of Torchy’s XXX Hot Sauce. If any of you are brave enough to try this one - please let me know how it goes! If I were you, I would have a carton of milk and a stack of extra tortillas readily available :)
Also, in celebration of their fifth annual Some Like It Hot August, Torchy’s will be hosting a free screening of E.T. the Extra Terrestrial at Mueller Lake Park in partnership with Alamo Drafthouse on Friday, 8/31! They will have the Torchy’s trailer on site serving up some Torchy’sclassics - I seriously can’t wait for this event. I love movies and love tacos so this is my dream Friday night.
